The Employment Of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act, 1993

The Act was enacted by the Parliament on the authority of State Legislatures of Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tripura and West Bengal. Subsequently it was adopted by a few other States. The Act prohibits the construction and maintenance of dry latrines and employment of person for manual scavenging of human excreta.

Violation of the Act shall be a cognizable offence, with imprisonment for a term which may extend to an year.
