Financing Pattern

The Central grants-in-aid ranging from Rs.3 lakhs to Rs.5 lakhs could be sanctioned for setting up a Building Centre. The grant is disbursed through HUDCO.

Land

Each Centre will be set up on a plot of land measuring not less than one-and-a-half acres which should be made available free of cost or at a nominal rent.

Institutional Framework

The Centre may be registered as a Trust/Society under the society Registration Act/Public Trust/Charitable Endowment Act or such other Act available in the State.

Progress

HUDCO has so far sanctioned 584 Building Centres along the length and breadth of the country for a grant assistance of Rs. 2248.10 lacs out of which Rs. 1634.90 lacs has been released to the Building Centres of which more than 500 are doing good work.

Status

The scheme of Building Centre has been discontinued from 10th Plan by the Planning Commission. During the Zero-based budgeting exercise for 2002-03, it was felt that promotional role of the Ministry in respect of Building Centre was fully discharged; hence this scheme can be tapered off. So it stands discontinued from the 10th plan.  However, strengthening of building centre movement, as a new scheme, is under consideration.
